For A Bleaker Tomorrow

One of Lidl’s slogans (and a “corporate responsibility objective” of the company) is to work “For a better tomorrow”. The electoral-style placard above urges “Don’t vote Lidl” and alleges that the company is “funding genocide for a bleaker tomorrow” and that its “policy is to fund apartheid, occupation, genocide” – perhaps through selling Israeli-made goods – particularly wipes made by Lupilu (ig video | Fb video | Fb | Change.org) – and through its parent company Schwarz’s acquisition of an Israeli cyber-security company.

The final image is of a Lasaır Dhearg tarp in Lenadoon: “Israeli goods free zone – there are no products ‘Made in Israel’ for sale in this area”.

Fight Back, Vote Unionist

“By not voting, these people win. Fight back, vote unionist.” “These people” are: lawyer Pat Finucane, who was assassinated by the UDA in 1989 (far left panel); Shankill bomber Seán Kelly (WP) (second and third panels, with a 2017 BelTel quote about Kelly canvassing for Finucane); John Finucane, the incumbent Sınn Féın MP for Belfast North (fourth panel, with Gerry Kelly, MLA and previously unsuccessful candidate in Belfast North), and Gerry Adams (fifth panel, with Kelly and Finucane).

In the 2019 election, both the UUP and SDLP did not field candidates in Belfast North, and Sınn Féın’s John Finucane won over the DUP’s Nigel Dodds. In this election, the SDLP is fielding a candidate while the UUP is not; however, recent changes in the constituency boundary are predicted to favour nationalists (Bangor Dub | Slugger) and Finucane is generally odds-on favourite to win (OddsChecker).

A very similar tarp was mounted on the Shankill (part of which is in the Belfast North constituency) in 2019 (see Steeped In Blood). See also: Sinn Fein-IRA’s Golden Boy.

Ulster Freedom Fighters

The UDA began using the “Ulster Freedom Fighters” name from February 1973 onwards in order to avoid the UDA becoming a proscribed organisation, though its members had already killed dozens of people in 1972 and January 1973 (WP timeline). (Fifty Years Of Service (in Ballymoney) marks the fiftieth anniversary – in 2021 – of the UDA.)

The tarp shown above likewise conflates the UDA and UFF, with two images from 1972, before the “UFF” name was used; on the left, the men marching behind a van marked “UDA Patrol” are on the Shankill Road (BelTel); on the right, four men stand at a barricade in the Woodvale (Victor Patterson).

The UDU board immediately below was seen previously in Ulster Defence Unions.

Queen Of Angels

Queen Elizabeth II died, aged 96, on September 8th, 2022, and is now (according to this board) queen of the angels in heaven (Matthew 28:2), which perhaps allows her to send other angels to Earth (Matthew 24:31) to deliver messages to chosen people.

Also included (below) from the same street is a memorial tarp to British soldiers in the Great War and WWII, including Vickers machine guns, Spitfire aeroplanes, and a WWI tank (perhaps a Mark V (Tank Museum)).

How Real Men ‘Take A Knee’

Here is a survey of PUL boards (from left to right) at the shops in the centre of the village of Moygashel, just south of Dungannon.

First is a British Army soldier in a firing position. Compare this board to Now Is The Time To Kneel in Clonduff, Castlereagh, which suggested that the time for soldiers to kneel was in mourning for Queen Elizabeth.

The subject of the second image is obscure. Vanguard as a political and activist group dissolved in 1977 (WP) and the name and emblem have been taken up by the Vanguard Bears, a Rangers supporters’ club (see e.g. Defending Our Traditions).

Third is a children’s mural, produced (in part) by children from Howard primary school.

The ‘Time To Decide’ and UDR 8th (Co. Tyrone) battalion roll of honour were seen previously, alongside two others which are now absent, in Belfast Agreement Null & Void.

Beyond those is a tarp celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee, in 2022.

Finally, a Moygashel Youth Club (Fb) mural in disrepair.

The Children Of Palestine

“Attach an item for every child murdered by the IDF in Palestine”. If the practice were followed in accordance with Al Jazeera’s track of casualties in Palestine, there would be roughly 16,500 teddy-bears and other soft toys on these railings at William Street/Anne Street in Dungannon.

Seas Leıs An Phalaıstín

Two murals have been added to the exterior of Felons’ Club in Andersonstown to show support for Palestine. Above, on the Lake Glen side of the club, a printed board reading “We stand with Palestine – seas leis an Phalaıstín” and including an Emmalene Blake image (ig) on the right (shown in close-up, below); further below, a “Stop the genocide in Gaza” tarp above the entrance.

Also included are images of several memorial plaques from the courtyard, to James Smyth, Anraí (Harry) Osborne, Seosamh Ó Conghaıle (Joseph Connolly), and Roger Casement. “County Antrim Memorial: Tógaḋ an leaċt seo mar ċoṁarṫa urraıme, grá agus dílse do na saıġdıúırí uaısle as Contae Aontroma, a martraíoḋ ar son Ṗoblaċt Na hÉıreann. The Defence Of Ardoyne

Martin Meehan joined the IRA in 1966 and was one of a few IRA volunteers defending Catholics in Ardoyne (Ard Eoın) in August 1969. Rioting did not cease there until the 16th, when British troops were finally deployed to the Crumlin Road to block mobs coming from the Woodvale and Shankill. Meehan resigned after the failure of the IRA to defend Ardoyne, Clonard, and Divis. This Magill article from the time summarises the IRA’s actions as “late, amateur and uncertain”. (Meehan would later rejoin the IRA and PIRA.)

Unrecognisable Britishness

Billy Wright broke with the UVF over the ceasefire in 1994 and after being expelled (and the Mid-Ulster brigade disbanded) in the summer of 1996, formed the LVF (WP). The tarp shown above, however, is in the UVF Ballykeel area of Ballymena, which has come around to his anti-Agreement way of thinking in the current anti-Protocol environment. There is video of the speeches from which these paragraphs come; the first paragraphs can be seen in this AP report; the third paragraph (from a speech on Xitter) is followed by the claim that “democracy has been stood on its head”.

“”I am living through the death of our nation, the destruction of our way of life. I am sick of ambiguity, I am sick of the government’s lies and deceit. I will not become part of a process that is designed to ease our people into a United Ireland. They shall demand concession after concession, their small inches will soon turn to yards, then yards to miles and finally they shall have their way, your Britishness shall become unrecognisable.” – No Irish Sea border – Maintain the Union – Defending our heritage and culture.”

Remember Me

“Remember me – Glenn Quinn. Murdered by cowards. We all know who they are!” The body of Glenn Quinn was found in his Carrickfergus home in January 2020. His family believe he was beaten and left to die by members of the South East Antrim UDA; as a result of their accusation they have been threatened a dozen or more times (BBC). The Crimestoppers’ 20,000 pounds reward has now – on the fourth anniversary of the death – been doubled by an anonymous donor. (BBC)
