Out Of The Ashes Of 1969

The Provisional IRA arose “Out of the ashes of 1969”, but the lineage is a long one and all but one of the organisations, events, and arms depicted here precede 1969: Cumann Na mBan, Na Fıanna Éıreann, Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann, a Celtic shield and sword, a pike (from the 1798 Rebellion), a Thompson gun, the Tricolour; only the assault rifle is modern and perhaps also is meant to indicate the “Belfast Brigade” Provisionals. “Fuaır sıad bás as son saoırse na hÉıreann.” Portraits of 21 locals appear along the roof-line.

For a PUL use of the phrase, see Out Of The Ashes.

Andersonstown Barracks

The RUC barracks at the junction of the Falls Road and Glen Road was demolished in 2005. Since then, it has become a small park and since 2008 the back wall has been full of republican messages and imagery. The metal-work commemorating the hunger strikers pre-dates the painted and printed works, dating back to 2006.

(There is a complete Visual History at Extramural Activity.)

Also included (last) is a mobile board, parked on the Glen Road side, commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the second hunger strike (“Stailc Ocrais Tríocha Bliain”), in which ten IRA and INLA prisoners died.

Never Again

Fian Gerald McAuley was shot on Waterville Street by loyalists while helping residents move out of their burned-out homes on Bombay Street during the commencement of the Troubles in 1969 (An Phoblacht). This new board replaces a similar one on the other side of the street.

Never Again!

In August, 1969, families, mostly Catholic, were driven out and their homes burned in Bombay Street (and surrounding streets), between the Falls and Shankill (RTÉ news report). The defenselessness of the community then is reflected in the urging for “No decommission” in the present. Fıan Gerard McAuley (aged 15) was shot in nearby Waterville Street.

Saoırse

“Freedom.” On the left, a Starry Plough (of the INLA) is attached a spear of ancient Ireland, next to two pikes (of the 1798 Rebellion), behind an ancient shield filled in with the Gal Gréıne of the Fıanna; on the right, a volunteer from the modern “Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann” aims an assault rifle, all against a large Irish Tricolour.
