Hope Lives Here

“In our community no one walks in the darkness alone.” West Wellbeing (web) offers counselling and suicide-prevention services from its offices in the Dairyfarm centre on the Stewartstown Road. This new mural – by Glen Molly (ig) – is a little further along the road, just past Bell Steel Road.

With My Body Or Without It

This is a giant image of Padre Pio painted by Cha Cha (Carla Hodgson) (ig) inside the Harcourt Drive gates of what is now St Columban’s – Sacred Heart Boys primary school merged with Our Lady’s Girls to form St Columban’s primary last year (2024) (Belfast Media).

The prayer on the left – “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.” – continues “Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” The Capuchin friar is wearing gloves to cover his stigmata, and he was also thought capable of being in two places at once. (WP) His feast day is September 23rd.

Mo Chara

Kneecap member Mo Chara (Lıam Óg Ó hAnnaıdh) appeared in court (in London) on Wednesday on terrorism charges and was bailed for a further month while the judge rules on a technical issue about whether the trial can go forward (BBC). (See previously The Magic Within.)

The art above on a Galliagh (Derry) sub-station reflects Kneecap’s popularity among local youth. The word “Mo Chara” (“my friend”) is painted with a shamrock, an oak leaf (symbol of Derry city), and a Claddagh ring.

Painted by Peaball (web) with young people from On Street (Galliagh Community Centre & Galliagh Youth Club) (Fb).

Goodnight, Sisters

Derry native Nell McCafferty is commemorated by a mural in the Maiden City, launched on International Women’s Day (March 8th), 2025, and the annual Femme Sesh event was also dedicated to McCafferty (ig | Derry Journal).

McCafferty died last year (2024) after a long career as a journalist and activist (BBC). “Goodnight, sisters” was her parting phrase at the end of her segments on The Women’s Programme, which aired on RTÉ between 1983 and 1986 (Journal).

Here is RTÉ footage of Nell and Marian Finucane on the Late Late in 1991 and in 1980.

The mural was painted by Peaball (web) on a gable in Lisfannon Park and is visible from Lecky Road. The portrait of McCafferty appeared on the cover of (the Penguin Ireland edition of) her autobiography Nell.

For the mural on the low wall (in the wide shot, below), see Two Nations One Struggle.

Art Serves To Establish Community

“‘Art serves to establish community. It links us with others and with the things around us in a shared vision and effort’ – Gerhard Richter”. The quote is collected in Richter’s ‘Notes 1962’ (Archive.org registration required), from the beginning of his career, in the year after he escaped from East to West Germany and the two murals he had produced for his diplomas were painted over.
