Save The Human Tribe

This appears to be a small work on boards by Italian artist Jorit (ig) (full name Jorit Ciro Cerullo) who typically paints large walls. The pieces are all of human faces, and they all have in common a two pairs of joined streaks, one on each cheek.

The painting has been mounted on Northumberland Street (Visual History), west Belfast, in a vacant spot left by the Climate Change board which dates back to 2012 and which was seen most recently with a Martyrs’ Committee board placed on top (T05821).

Respect

“Service workers – Community – Environment – Diversity”. The “#GoodForNothing” campaign, launched in 2015 (youtube), aimed to change common perceptions of young people by highlighting their volunteer work.

The piece is by emic (web) working with pupils from Wheatfield Primary school (Alternatives).

Fear Not

Frenchman Fréderíc Ozanam was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1997 for establishing the Society Of St Vincent De Paul in 1833, itself named after a French priest from the 1600s, who is quoted to the right of Ozanam’s portrait: “Fear not; calm will follow the storm, and perhaps soon.”

Painted by KVLR (web) in Mill Street, Newry, on the side-wall of the St Vincent’s charity shop.

Be A Voice, Not An Echo

Here are two butterfly-themed painted bus-shelters in Portadown, one in Corcrain (opposite the shops) and the other in Killicomaine (at the bonfire ground).

The more recent piece is by Visual Waste (web), in association with Armagh, Banbridge, And Craigavon Policing And Community Support Partnerships (Fb); the older piece is probably by him too. It dates back to 2018 and is sporting several enhancements from local youth.

This Is The Crew

“Titanic Gentlemen’s Club [Fb], every Wednesday 6pm – 8pm, Connswater Community Centre. Make mental health great again. Every man has an engine room – you don’t have to maintain it alone. Let’s break the silence and support men’s mental health.”

The green ribbon is the symbol of the campaign to release political prisoners, and “Make ___ great again” is the form of the slogan of the MAGA movement in the United States.

The board was officially launched July 9th (Fb) in Severn Street, east Belfast.

“”BreaktheStigma” for the men who rise, together: We are the voices once held back,/Taught to smile through every crack./But now we speak, we face the fight,/Together stepping into the light.//This is Break the Stigma, strong and true,/A brotherhood of me and you./Men alike, from every road,/Each carrying a silent load.//No shame in tears, no guilt in pain,/No more hiding hurt in vain./We rise as one, we make it known-/You don’t have to walk alone.//We’re not defined by past or scar,/By what we’ve lost or who we are./We’re here to talk, to heal, to grow,/To lift each other from below.//So here we stand, hearts open wide,/With honesty we will not hide./For every man who needs a sign-/Break the Stigma holds the line.”

M-Space

“I am … strong, focused, love, hope, caring, beautiful, body & mind.” M-Space is a project from Springboard Opportunities (web) providing intensive mental-health services for 115 young people.

This pair of utility boxes is on Royal Avenue, Belfast city centre. The backgrounds on the rear were perhaps painted during Culture Night.

The Drumbeg Omniplex

These are images of the sub-station at the green in the middle of Drumbeg. Above are children bearing messages of “happiness” and peace (a second trio of children on the right-hand side of the image above has been blotted out by a large pink splotch). The plaque in the top right reads, “A Shared Space & Services Re-Imaging Project supported by the European Union’s Peace IV Programme”.

On the other walls are a goal with points for hitting different spots, the “Drumbeg Omniplex” with “movie coming soon”, and two pairs of Irish dancers on either side of a reflective panel that has now disappeared.

I Owe My Allegiance To The Working Class

“I owe my allegiance [here “allegience”] to the working class” is a phrase associated with Seamus Costello (b. 1939), who fought for the IRA during the Border Campaign and was interned in the Curragh for two years. He stayed with the Officials during the split, but was driven out in 1974 and formed the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) and the INLA. He was shot in 1977 (WP). Nora Connolly, at Costello’s funeral, said, “He was the only one who truly understood what James Connolly meant when he spoke of his vision of the freedom of the Irish people.”
