Don’t Buy Into Genocide

“Don’t buy into genocide – boycott these companies funding the genocide in Palestine: McDonald’s, Starbucks Coffee, Barclays, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Teva. Saoırse don Phalaıstín.”

There was a march in Belfast (in early September) which went to the offices or stores of some of these businesses (Independent) because they fund or support the Israeli military – the links above outline the connections. There are also campaigns from various groups (here is IPSC’s) to boycott consumer goods from Israeli producers.

This board is in Sugar Island, Newry.

Radiate Positivity

Armagh won the All-Ireland Senior football championship in 2024, with a squad that included three players from Crossmaglen: Oısín O’Neill, Cıan McConville, and Rían O’Neill.

In the bottom-left corner, players from Crossmaglen Rangers turn to face the Irish tricolour, flanked by the club flag and the flag of Palestine – the flags fly below the watchtower of a British Army barracks (perhaps based on an image from the 2005 Armagh final – Irish Times).

On the right is an umbrella in pride colours, below which people can pose and take pictures: “Snap & tag us”.

This is a revised version of the mural, which originally bore the Ernesto Cardenal quote, “They tried to bury you/us but they didn’t know you/we were seeds” (ig).

Free Marwan

“Free Marwan and all Palestinian political prisoners”. Marwan Barghouti, a leader of the group Fatah, has been in Israeli prison since 2002. He was seen last month in a video showing Israeli’s national security minister taunting the 66-year-old Barghouti in his cell (BBC | Al Jazeera | NPR).

Barghouti and 1,000 other prisoners went on hunger-strike in 2017 in order to win family visits for prisoners; see “Free Marwan Barghouti” in Belfast and in Derry and Barghouti’s quote “Our Chains Will Be Broken Before We Are” in a north Belfast stencil.

The photograph reproduced in this mural, of Barghouti giving the “V” for victory symbol while in handcuffs, can be seen at New Arab.

Divis Street, west Belfast, on the International Wall, where Barghouti’s son Aarab spoke at the launch (youtube).

Newry Supports Palestine

Here are two IRSP (web) boards and one IRPWA (web) board at Camlough Road on the edge of Derrybeg, Newry. Above, “Stop the genocide – Newry supports Palestine” (Teach Na Fáilte is the IRSP’s ex-prisoners division – Newry Fb); immediately below, “For a socialist republic – ‘He was the only one who truly understood what James Connolly meant when he spoke of his vision of the freedom of the Irish people’ – Nora O’Connolly O’Brien on Seamus Costello”; last below, “End internment – Portlaoise, Maghaberry, Hydebank”.

Better Way To Live

Kneecap were back in town opening for the Fontaines DC at Belfast Vital at the Boucher Road playing fields on Friday (BBC) (and an after-party at the Beehive) before zipping down to the Electric Picnic festival in Laois. At both concerts they were outspoken in their support for Palestinians in Gaza, as well as criticising the DUP, Alliance (Belfast Live), McDonald’s and Kemi Badenoch (Irish Examiner). In each of the past three years, the band has added to the wall at the corner of Hawthorn Street and Cavendish Street (see in order: Incendiary DeviceEngland Get Out Of Ireland, and Kneecap’s Fine Art) and it is now full with the addition of “Free Palestine – Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinian people” below the chimneys.

Seasaımıd Le Lıam Óg

“We stand with Lıam Óg”, that is Lıam Óg Ó hAnnaıdh (on the left of the image above), a.k.a. Mo Chara, a member of the rap group Kneecap who appeared in court (in London) on Wednesday August 20th on “terrorism” charges and was bailed for a further month while the judge rules on a technical issue about whether the trial can go forward (BBC). (See previously The Magic Within and Seasaımıd Le Kneecap.)

The night before (the 19th) this board featuring images of the band-members and the band in its early days was unveiled on the Whiterock Road. (Video of the launch can be found on the Glór Na Móna instagram account.)

In the background is a Palestinian flag and “Saoırse don Phalaıstín” [Freedom for Palestine] is written along the bottom.

Free Palestine

The number of dead Palestinians in Gaza has now reached 64,000 (WP | Al Jazeera | PBS), famine has been declared by the IPC (Guardian), and Israel is calling up tens of thousands of reservists for a new offensive in the strip (AP).

This new mural by Peaball (web) and GCR [Galliagh Community Response (Fb)] shows a blind-folded child in a war-torn landscape.

Mo Chara

Kneecap member Mo Chara (Lıam Óg Ó hAnnaıdh) appeared in court (in London) on Wednesday on terrorism charges and was bailed for a further month while the judge rules on a technical issue about whether the trial can go forward (BBC). (See previously The Magic Within.)

The art above on a Galliagh (Derry) sub-station reflects Kneecap’s popularity among local youth. The word “Mo Chara” (“my friend”) is painted with a shamrock, an oak leaf (symbol of Derry city), and a Claddagh ring.

Painted by Peaball (web) with young people from On Street (Galliagh Community Centre & Galliagh Youth Club) (Fb).

Death, Death

Bob Vylan (a punk-rap duo) at June’s Glastonbury Festival led the crowd in chants of “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF” (BBC | Reuters). These have now appeared as stencils, along with Derry oak-leaves from 2024’s Creggan Is my Home, on signal boxes in Central Drive, Creggan, Derry.

Kneecap took the stage immediately after Bob Vylan, and were likewise investigated for their comments supporting Palestinians and criticizing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer (Reuters).
