A Revolution In Recycling!

For Recycle Week 2021 (WRAP), Laura Nelson (ig) and Leo Boyd (web) installed a series of seven pieces (each a combination of sign-writing and paste-up) on the abandoned Fanum House, using CO2-absorbing paint (from Graphenstone) and a potato-based glue for the paste-ups. “A revolution in recycling!”

The X-Wing Land-Rover was a later addition, on top of one of the original paste-ups.

Movie Magic

This is work by David J McMillan (web) for Queen’s Film Theatre (web), next to Cracker Wee Spot in University Square Mews/the alley behind the cinema. On one wall, we have movie-making, with clapboard and camera; on the other, the movie is projected to an audience eating popcorn.

Slaughter Of The Innocents

The flags of the Paratroop Regiment and Israel fly alongside the Union Flag over the Bayardo memorial on the Shankill Road, west Belfast. The boards around the wall present photographs of bombings and killings under headings such as ‘Children murdered by Sinn Fein – IRA‘, ‘Sinn Fein/IRA’s Slaughter Of The Innocents’, ‘IRA – Sinn Fein – ISIS no difference‘.

The Paratroop regiment killed two Protestants on the Shankill in 1972 and the community did not forgive them – compare Stop The Witch Hunt from the middle Shankill with Paras Fight Back – but the flag is now flying at the Argyle Street memorial because, the Belfast Telegraph suggests, Soldier F has links to the area. Soldier F – the Paratroop soldier who is facing two charges of murder on Bloody Sunday 1972 – plead ‘not guilty’ in December 2024 (BBC) and will stand trial in September 2025 (BBC | RTÉ).

Street Dreams

Here is a selection of painted junction boxes in Newry: “River Deep” is by Zippy (ig) and the theatre curtains and masks by FrankieB (ig); the sunflowers and forest are by HM Constance (web); Hold Tight is for PIPS (ig); In Newry We Trust is by JMK (ig); the three-person hug is by Friz (ig); Bród is by Frankie B (ig).

Locations: ‘Save the bees’ in Buttercrane Quay; ‘River Deep’ in Francis Street; ‘comedy and tragedy’ on Bank Parade; sunflowers and green portal in Cloghanramer Road.

Carlingford Sunset

Warrenpoint’s ‘Wake The Giant’ festival (web) returns this year (2025) on June 28th and 29th (programme), featuring a ‘parade of giants’ (puppets) on both days.

This street art was painted for last year’s (2024) festival on the boarded-up façade of the Osborne Hotel by English artist Faunagraphics (web).

Welcome To Narnia

“‘That part of Rostrevor which overlooks Carlingford Lough is my idea of Narnia’ – CS Lewis”. Lewis wrote these words in a letter to his brother Warnie (Guardian), referring to time spent in the area as a child (Ireland.com). The lough can be seen from the glacial erratic known as Cloughmore (the big stone), which sits 300 metres above the town in Kilbroney Park on the slopes of Slieve Martin; a snowy image from behind the rock can be seen at Heart Of Rostrevor.

Also included is an image of the small painting of Mr. Tumnus on the front of the building – he welcomes children who have stepped through the wardrobe.

Both are by Pigment Space (ig) on the Rostrevor Inn in Bridge Street, Rostrevor.

Fiddler’s Green

The town of Rostrevor, Co Down, on Carlingford Lough, is home to an annual fiddling and traditional music festival each summer called ‘Fiddler’s Green’ (web). The 2025 installation – from July 16th to 20th – will be the festival’s thirty-seventh.

The fiddler shown here is by Visual Waste (web) on the side of Hillside Holiday Home & Lodge (web), Mary Street, Rostrevor.

Newcastle Community Cinema

“NCC” in the final image, below (of movie characters at the cinema), stands for Newcastle Community Cinema (web) which opened on Halloween night, 2009. The street art shown here is at the organisation’s current hall, in Main Street, home not just to movie nights but activities including martial arts and u3a.
