Belfast Romances

This Leo Boyd (web) piece in Great Victoria Street brings together many of the ideas seen in his posters over the years, including When Urban Love Goes Wrong, Belfast Kitty Hall, DeLorean cars, Godzilla – “The monster created by atoms gone wild! Escaped from Belfast zoo”, and the wind-up police land-rover.

All Kings Die, Some Live Forever

The Malojian (Fb) mural (shown below) on the Oh Yeah Centre was the idea of Lyndon Stephens, founder of Quiet Arch records, and when he died in January 2020 after a long illness (Hotpress), Stevie Scullion returned the favour by organising the painting of a mural by Jonny McKerr (JMK) & Dermot McConaghy (DMC) the following November (Dig With It).

Manny’s

“At the heart of a changing Belfast.” The old Bank Street (looking towards St Mary’s, Chapel Lane) is recreated in a new mural outside Manny’s fish and chips, though with some liberties taken. (Here is the street in 1915 and in 1924.) Kelly’s Cellars, for example, should be off to the left, rather than hovering over St Mary’s Chapel Lane and below City Hall.

Landmarks such as the Titanic Centre, the H&W cranes, and An Chultúrlann can be seen in the wide shot.

Kelly’s Cellars

These three pieces are along the front of Kelly’s Cellars in Bank Square in Belfast city centre. The Jameson piece is by Alana McDowell (ig).

There is a Connolly Trail plaque to the left of the Guinness painting; there is also a ‘blue plaque’ about the United Irishmen – see the Peter Moloney Collection.

Ring Of Peace

The speech balloons that were added to the Ring Of Peace mural in Waring Street to advertise office space are still there, seven years later.

The bubbles read “Forget it, Muriel. I’m moving my business to CQHQ without you!” “Oh Jeff … It’s too close to the City Centre! I want to be with nature …”.

Belfast Taxis Community Interest Company

“Serving the community for over fifty years.” BTCIC is the current name for what was previously the West Belfast Taxi Association. Black taxis have been running up and down the Falls since 1970, providing an alternative form of transportation to local people during the Troubles when buses were cancelled or, as in this picture, burnt out and used as barricades. They now, in addition, provide tours of the murals (such as the Bobby Sands mural in Sevastopol Street) and Belfast city. Taxi Trax has a web site but here provides a phone number for those already at the International Wall, where there has been a black taxi mural since 2003. There are other WBTA murals in Beechmount and Ardoyne. The painters have signed the mural: Doherty’s Coal Merchant and Lyons Tea.
